Qatar's state electricity and water production company, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), has commissioned Sogreah to carry out the feasibility study for the first-ever solar-powered desalination plant in the country.
Sogreah will be in charge of determining the feasibility of the project for several seawater desalination plants powered by solar energy. This project is part of Qatar National Food Security Program (QNFSP) launched by the Qatari Emir in 2009. The water produced in these plants will be used to irrigate agricultural land. Within the current context of the struggle against global warming, the Emir has opted to produce desalinated water without creating any greenhouse gases. Local authorities have a very ambitious goal of producing up to 5 million m3 of irrigation water per day.
The technical studies will be complemented by a financial study in order to determine the cost of each cubic metre of water provided for irrigation, and by an environmental study to assess the impact of seawater intakes and brine and cooling water outfalls downstream of the desalination plant.
