Knowledge of the fate of pollutants in the air, soil and water and their effects on humans and ecosystems has increased tremendously in recent decades. Industrial firms, governments and local authorities now go to great lengths to assess risks, manage harmful emissions, monitor contamination sources and clean up contaminated sites.
