Water and the environment remain Sogreah's pivotal sectors of activity both in France and abroad.
Dams and hydraulic structures
The joint, rational management of water and aquatic environments will be a key challenge of the 21st century. An essential yet unequally distributed resource, a key vector for transport and a major natural hazard, water is vital to mankind and raises a host of issues and questions. Water has always been at the heart of Sogreah's activity, and remains the focus of its attention through studies of resource sharing and usage, drought and flood risk management, river morphology, environmental impact and the various development works that such issues might require.
Energy, electricity
The “New Deal” on the energy market consists in diversifying energy production schemes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Although economic growth remains the key factor driving variations in energy consumption, the need to limit greenhouse gas emissions and reduce dependence on oil is now guiding development policies towards renewable energy and the promotion of low-carbon technologies. Sogreah originally specialised in designing hydropower schemes and the associated power transmission installations, and is now expanding its repertoire to include all forms of renewable energy, demand-side management and clean development issues.
Maritime
Three quarters of global trade is transported by sea, and two thirds of the world's population lives in a coastal area. Sogreah is driven by a desire to reconcile economic development, population growth and environmental conservation. We have worked on estuary, coast and port development schemes for nearly 70 years, building up specific know-how enabling us to handle complex issues. Thanks to our experts, hydraulics laboratory, library of powerful numerical models, innovative developments and project management capability, Sogreah is now one of the world's leading port and maritime engineering consultants.
Industry
The viability of an industrial site depends to a great extent on efficiently managed utilities and pertinent environmental strategies. The profitability and reliability of an industrial plant depend on more than just efficient manufacturing processes; they also rely on procedures and infrastructure dedicated to supplying energy, raw materials, water and industrial fluids, managing effluent and waste, ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations, preventing accidental pollution and carrying out possible decontamination measures. Having worked for many years alongside industrial firms and become familiar with their needs, and built up solid experience of local contexts in more than 200 countries, Sogreah's response to all these issues is proactive, efficient, economical, sustainable - and innovative, in cases where innovation can be value-creating.
Urban environment
Managing the water and waste cycles is a vital part of any sustainable development strategy. Urban growth is continuing at a rapid pace in developing countries, and it has become difficult to manage and protect resources and the environment as more people gain access to tap water, wastewater discharges and sewerage needs increase, household waste volumes rise and soils and consequently aquifers become increasingly polluted. Over more than half a century of water supply and sanitation projects, we have built up solid experience of the water cycle from abstraction to reuse and, of the waste management cycle from collection to recycling, and of site and soil remediation, which we use to assist urban communities of all sizes and nationalities thanks to our extensive network of branch offices and subsidiaries and our in-depth knowledge of many countries' cultures and customs.
Urban development
Creating sustainable towns and cities requires a cross-cutting vision and in-depth knowledge of urban development. Nearly half of the world's population lives in a city, and one person in seven lives in an urban area with more than a million inhabitants. This unprecedented urban development, which is continuing in emerging countries and resulting in urban sprawl across Europe, causes widespread environmental and social harm and is prompting governments and local authorities to consider more rational development solutions. One of Sogreah's key objectives is to contribute to creating sustainable towns and cities that meet the economic, social and environmental challenges of the coming years. Sogreah has been working in urban and regional development for half a century, and we use our expertise to help our clients define their projects and design and perform all the works required in a sustainable manner.
Consultancy
Pertinent economic, institutional and organisational analyses call for expert technical assessments. Sogreah has always combined the engineer's leading-edge, diversified technical skills with the consultant's analysis, strategic appraisal and audit capabilities, putting the company in an original position that appeals to many public- and private-sector clients. We are capable of accurately assessing highly complex situations and problems. Thanks to our independence and commitment to high ethical standards, our experience in numerous fields and our knowledge of widely varying statutory contexts, we help our clients to find appropriate solutions for either drawing up master plans and public policies or completing sale or purchase transactions, investments or service outsourcing in the fields of water, energy and the environment.
Environmental studies
Implementing sustainable development means adapting each project to complex, restrictive legislation. Since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, which defined the guiding principles of sustainable development, environmental regulations have constantly been extended and strengthened with the aim of reconciling economic, ecological and social requirements, and this has resulted in an increasing need for studies. Sogreah has been studying pollution and its impacts since the 1970s, and we now help our private- and public-sector clients with all their statutory or voluntary environmental procedures. We use our expertise in the fields of water, energy, urban planning and industry to define and minimise the impact of all types of development scheme, without losing sight of our clients' economic objectives.
Services
| In all its fields of activity, Sogreah provides the full range of consultancy and engineering services that its clients expect, from general and preliminary design studies through to the hand-over and commissioning of development works. Sogreah is an independent consultant, drawing on nearly a century of experience in engineering and on the constantly updated know-how of its multi-disciplinary teams, its numerical and physical modelling laboratories, etc.
